about

"Guide" was started in 2016 as a demo I wrote for a second album with The Fringe. Years passed, but I always felt that the song had some interesting elements and deep, emotional potential. When I decided to keep it as a solo track, I still wanted Nick D'Virgilio to play on it. He tracked the drums in 2018, then it sat on my hard drive for a while...

When our lockdown began in March 2020, "Guide" was one of the first songs I felt the urge to return to. Undoubtedly inspired by the events that were unfolding, I did a re-write on the lyrics on March 25th and moved on to tracking the vocals.

Shortly afterwards, I reached out to Dave Kerzner to contribute a plethora of keyboard textures. Although Dave and I have worked in many configurations over the years, this marks the first time since 2012 (Lo-Fi Resistance - Chalk Lines), that Dave has appeared on one of my songs.

The mix was put in the hands of Nicholas Morrow, who has previously worked with me on my solo album, Blank (2016), along with select tracks from Idle (2019). Mastering was handled by Dave McNair, who also mastered the entirety of Idle.

lyrics

We always say “the end is near”
We need a reason to disappear
It’s a strange way to feel like we’re here

We always think it won’t be us
We train ourselves to not discuss
As we’re blinking, shrinking to dust

I can’t change a thing about the mysteries outside
I just want to navigate with love to be my guide

We always find an avatar
We hide the child we know we are
Reminded, blinded by scars

We always lose our sense of time
We like to know that the line will rhyme
But the truth is, we’re not all equipped to climb

Out there is a place we can’t control
Chaos and beauty working together taking its toll
Searching within us for the pieces to make us whole
As we learn, we can try again to lessen the burden and unlock our soul

Love be my guide
