about

This is a special archival set from 2019 that I'm happy to share with you. It is the exact recording I sent to Gavin Harrison just a few days later for consideration of opening for The Pineapple Thief on their North American tour in the fall of 2019.

For context, I hadn't performed a set of my own music in a long time, and I arrived at the conclusion that I needed to start fresh by building a solo set. Playing solo would provide some flexibility in the music (specifically improvisation), but perhaps more importantly, in future logistics and mobility for touring. This was my first attempt at doing so, and I chose my favorite club in NYC, The Bitter End, as a starting point.

Now, when I paid the club's fee for a room recording, it was for my own posterity. I had no idea that it would essentially become an audition! The short version is that The Pineapple Thief announced their tour a couple of days after, and I reached out to Gavin to see if they were taking on an opener. He asked if I was interested, and if I could send something for reference. I sent this with the usual self-conscious caveats, and the rest is history...

As for the songs and approach, it ended up being very different than the set I played on tour. For starters, I'm playing electric guitar here with a lot of extended solos. I used a Telecaster for the first two songs - "Bottom Feeder Blues" (which hadn't been released yet) and "Adopted Son" - and an electric 12-string for the rest. Three songs from "Blank" are represented in the set, whereas none of them made the cut by the time I went on tour.

Listening now with some distance, I can enjoy this recording for what it is and what it did for me. Life is indeed full of surprises.
